Space-Available-In-District Transfers

The Ann Arbor Board of Education has approved a Space-Available In-District Transfer policy that allows for a permanent reassignment of in-district students from one school to another. Under the Space-Available In-District Transfer policy, families that live within the Ann Arbor Public School district may apply for a transfer from their assigned school (as defined by the Ann Arbor Public School Street Index) to one of the identified space-available schools. Families of students who receive these transfers are officially assigned to the requested school instead of their original school. If the transfer request is granted, students can stay for all grades offered at that school; students must attend the middle school for their attendance area. Transportation to and from school is the responsibility of the participating parent/guardian.

Applications will be accepted April 5 - May 28, 2004

Every parent wishing to apply for a Space-Available In-District Transfer must fill out an application.
Procedures for applying are as follows:

  1. Applications are to be submitted in person, mail or fax to the:

    Office hours are 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. Monday through Friday.
  2. Copies of the application form are available from school offices and from this web site.
  3. Schools with space available under the policy are determined annually based upon capacity and projected enrollment. For the 2004/05 school year:

  4. Some of the schools listed this year have only limited space. Actual numbers will be determined with further monitoring of projections. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available in a given school, a lottery will be conducted.
  5. The district will notify students/families of the status of their transfer request on or before the first week in June.

Under the Space-Available In-District Transfer policy, transportation to and from school is the responsibility of the participating parent/guardian.


2004 College & Career Fair

Ann Arbor Public Schools 19th annual College & Career Fair is Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Pioneer High School from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Once again our focus will not only be on colleges and universities, but on career programs as well. Representatives from colleges all over the nation and businesses from the Ann Arbor area will be present to meet with you, answer your questions and provide you with pertinent literature. All the colleges and businesses will have tables in the cafeteria and gymnastics room, which is located near the clock-tower entrance to Pioneer High School. This night will provide your family with up-to-date information and enable you to make a person-to-person contact with college and business representatives. We look forward to seeing you there!

GO! Outdoors
with the Ann Arbor Public Schools

The Ann Arbor Public Schools received a grant of $200,000 from the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan for support to establish GO! Outdoors, a city-wide outdoor education program for children and families.

GO! Outdoors will involve children and their families in outdoor learning and recreation activities before and after school, on weekends and during the summer recess. The program will be based at Lakewood Elementary School and will make use of various outdoor sites throughout Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County, including schools, neighborhood parks, nature areas and community centers.

Ultimately, the project seeks to replace passive indoor activities (TV, video games) with constructive outdoor activities, to promote children’s sustained physical activity and interest in the natural world, to strengthen the involvement of adult family members, mentors and naturalists in the lives of children, and to strengthen collaboration among the school district, community organizations and environmental groups in ways that benefit children. The Ecology Center and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) are partnering with the Ann Arbor Schools on this project.

Several departments within the district are collaborating on this project. Lakewood Elementary School, the Environmental Education Program, and Community Education and Recreation are all involved.

Families will be informed of opportunities for participation through the Rec&Ed quarterly catalogs, which are mailed to all households within the district boundaries. Hourly staff positions to support this project will be posted through Human Resource Services. AAPS Sells 2003 Refinancing Bonds

The Public Schools of the City of Ann Arbor announces the successful sale of its $26,610,000 refinancing bonds. These Bonds are being issued for the purpose of refinancing the School District’s outstanding 1995 School Building and Site bonds. Instructional Services Improvement Plan

One Focus, One Agenda: Academic Success for All Students, is the focal point of the 2003-04 Ann Arbor Public Schools approved budget. It reflects the budget priorities and the long-range strategy and plan adopted by the Board of Education. Cognizant of this priority, the Division of Instructional Services Team undertook an examination of how it could facilitate attainment of this organizational priority in a manner that would result in sustained systemic improvement at each building level throughout the school district. It is the intent of the Instructional Services Staff to support each school being an organization “Where Greatness Grows” for each student.
For sustained student performance to be accomplished by all students, the Instructional Services Team has developed an agenda for action with One Focus, One Agenda: Academic Success for All Students.

Community Dialogues on Educational Facility Planning for Ann Arbor Public Schools

This series of three evening forums and focus groups will give you an opportunity to listen, learn, exchange views, express your opinions, and work with others in the community to create a viable, blueprint for the public schools district's learning facilities.

The Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Foundation has announced the availability of several grant opportunities that are open to the AAPS Community. For more information, please contact the Educational Foundation Office at 994-1969.

AAPS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION GRANT - Applications for the 2003-04 Educational Foundation Grants are now available. Download an application* (129KB PDF), or contact the Educational Foundation Office at 994-1969 or by e-mail (mccuisto@aaps.k12.mi.us). Grants are for a maximum of $1,000.00 for innovative projects that increase student achievement and self-esteem. The grant deadline is October 1, 2003.

ELEANORA BIHLER DAHLMAN ART GRANT - This grant, for $500.00, in honor of Mrs. Dahlman will be awarded to an art teacher who proposes a classroom art project devoted to painting. REPLICATION GRANTS - The AAPS Educational Foundation will fund a limited number of previously funded grants to be replicated by other teachers. for the 2003 - 2004 school year.If teachers are interested in duplicating a grant they should do the following:

  • Review the past grants that are available in the Partners for Excellence Office in Balas II. Call 994-1969 to arrange a time to come.
  • Talk with the teacher who wrote the original grant.

All Day Kindergarten at Bryant Elementary

The Ann Arbor Public Schools announces a new All-Day Kindergarten program at Bryant Elementary, open to all students entering the Ann Arbor Public School district in the Fall 2003.

No transportation will be provided to students that apply for the All-Day program at Bryant who reside outside the Bryant boundary.

The All-Day Kindergarten program will support and enrich the young student through the regular Kindergarten curriculum in the morning including the Balanced Literacy and Everyday Math programs. The afternoon will be devoted to enrichment programs to meet the needs of all students including those that need added support and those that are exceeding beyond grade level expectations.

Bryant was selected as the All-Day Kindergarten site because it is the districts early childhood center site. Students may also elect to attend only morning Kindergarten.
