August, 2008

Dear Skyline High School Parents and Students,

With the opening of our third comprehensive high school, district high school attendance boundaries and transportation schemes have been extensively redesigned. You will receive a “Welcome Back To School” magazine in the mail in August that will provide detailed information regarding all bus stop locations, school policies, etc. Skyline bus routes are also printed on the back of this letter.

This letter provides a broad overview of the transportation services and schedules devised especially for Skyline High School. There are several different groups of students who will travel to and from Skyline differently.
• District policy provides that students who live within 1.5 miles of their school are expected to walk. This is true for Skyline students, with some exceptions.
• Students who live South of M-14 may walk to Forsythe, Haisley, or Abbott schools (you pick the closest), and catch a shuttle bus to Skyline.
• Students who reside in the Skyline/Forsythe attendance area and are eligible for transportation (check the route listing for your location) will ride a bus along with Forsythe Middle School students.
• In the morning, these buses will deliver students to Skyline, and then take the MS students on to Forsythe.
• In the afternoon, 4 shuttle buses will take SHS students to Forsythe to transfer to their bus home. Please consult the route listing for your specific stop locations and bus numbers.
• Skyline students living in the Clague MS attendance area (west of Nixon Road) will be bused directly to and from Skyline.
• Students who do not reside in the Skyline attendance area will ride the HS bus to Huron or Pioneer High School in the morning. (Consult the district magazine for your bus number and stop time.) From there, catch a shuttle bus to Skyline. In the afternoon, shuttle buses deliver these Skyline students to Huron and Pioneer, where they transfer to the High School 7th hour AATA bus. (There is an AAPS after school bus for students who live outside the AATA service area.)

Please call the school with route questions. Representatives from Transportation will be on hand to answer questions at registration for Skyline students, August 19th and 20th. We’re very excited to be of service to all of you as we open this wonderful new school!

Sincerely

Bradford M. Mellor, Director of Transportation

Dear Skyline Parents and Guardians

By now you have received the most important word about how this school year has begun—the informal reports given to you by your son or daughter. The faculty and staff at Skyline hope these reports are positive. We hope you feel that the school year has begun well for your child.

The ninth graders adjusted easily to their new surroundings and their schedules, and are a friendly presence in the school. It seems to us at Skyline that classes began smoothly and that these first few days have been a fine beginning of what should be a productive school year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to send out a heartfelt thank you to the many parents that gave and are continuing to give their time and expertise to us at Skyline. The success of our registration and school opening is clearly associated with our parent volunteers. Skyline parents were here early and stayed late and I want you to know that your efforts did not go unnoticed and are genuinely appreciated by the Skyline students and staff.

You are cordially invited to attend Skyline High School’s Capsule Night, September 10, 2008 at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium. You will have an opportunity to meet the staff and visit with your youngster’s teachers. We will also have a performance by the Skyline Choir, which performed at Interlochen last August. We look forward to meeting you next Wednesday, September 10, 2008.

subject: PTSO contact data & volunteer form on website

You can make registration a little faster and easier this week by filling out the PTSO's contact data (for the school directory) and volunteer form on the website in advance. It's easy! Just use your Internet browser to go to http://www.aaps.k12.mi.us/skyline.ptso/contact_data. The form will ask you for names, address, phone & email addresses. You can select which information you want printed in the school directory. You can also tell us what PTSO functions you'd like to help with. After you click "submit", your information is secured; it can only be viewed by website administrators. You will be able to check your directory entry at Registration or Curriculum Night.

Mr. Pachera interviewed on WWJ
The interview will be on http://WWJ.com beginning Monday, August 18.

Thank you letter from Jayne Bower at WWJ Newsradio in Detroit:

Ms. Jackson,

I interviewed Tom Pachera for a “Back-To-School” report I am producing for WWJ in conjunction with The Detroit News.

I just want to let you know what an impressive spokesperson Mr. Pachera is for Skyline High School. His comments were thoughtful, intelligent, informative and interesting! I am also grateful to Tanishia Peterson for setting up the interview for me with very little lead time.

The entire interview will be on our website at WWJ.com beginning Monday, August 18. My reports featuring Mr. Pachera will be broadcast all day Monday. I will let him know the exact times.

Thank you and best of luck as you launch Skyline’s first year!

Sincerely,
Jayne Bower

Good afternoon,
We've received reports that some people are not receiving the Skyline High School Update messages. To facilitate troubleshooting this problem, I am sending a test message out via the system, and would appreciate it if you could send me a quick reply (e.g. "Got it!") if you received this test message.
Thanks for your help!

Orchestra Update:

There will be one final audition day on June 24th from 3:30-5:30 PM in the orchestra room (C110). Students will need to be prepared to play the audition requirements listed below. This audition will be on a first come first serve basis. I look forward to meeting more of you on June 24th.

Audition Requirements
Scales: two scales chosen, by Miss Cowper at the audition, from the following major scales: C, G, D, A, E, F, B-flat, and A-flat. Scales should be played two octaves with four notes slurred in a bow at a quarter note=100 bpm

Solo: a 3-5 minute solo that showcases your technical and musical ability:

Sight-reading: you will have 60 seconds to look over the sight-reading piece. You will not be allowed to play your instrument during this time, however, you may sing through your part. Use this time to look at the key signature, time signature, accidentals, rhythms, and any other signs and symbols that are in the part (D.C, D.S, fine, repeats, bowings, articulations, etc.)
